A 4-week guided study through Philippians. Discover the unshakeable joy Paul wrote about — even from a prison cell.
Paul writes from prison, yet his opening words overflow with thanksgiving and joy. This week we discover that gospel partnership — not circumstance — is what produces a settled, durable joy.
Memory verse — "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6)
Day 1 — Grace and Peace — Philippians 1:1-2
Paul opens with 'grace and peace' — not a greeting card cliché, but the two gifts every weary heart needs. Grace meets us where we are; peace settles what grace has reconciled. Notice he addresses the letter to 'all the saints' — ordinary believers like you.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, pour fresh grace and peace into the place I'm most aware of my need today. Amen.
Day 2 — Thankful Remembering — Philippians 1:3-6
Paul thanks God every time he remembers the Philippians. Gratitude isn't a feeling here — it's a practice. And his confidence isn't in their performance, but in the God who started the work and will finish it.
Reflect:
Pray: Lord, thank You for the people You've placed around me. Finish what You've begun in each of us. Amen.
Day 3 — Love That Abounds — Philippians 1:7-11
Paul prays that their love would 'abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight.' Love isn't sentiment — it's discernment shaped by Scripture. Mature love knows what is best and chooses it.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, grow my love deeper — rooted in truth, sharpened by discernment. Amen.
Day 4 — Chains That Advance the Gospel — Philippians 1:12-18
Paul's imprisonment didn't stop the gospel — it spread it. The guards heard. Other believers grew bolder. What looked like a setback was a setup for God's purposes.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, redeem the constraints I'm in. Use them for Your glory. Amen.
Day 5 — To Live Is Christ — Philippians 1:19-30
'To live is Christ, and to die is gain.' Paul's whole life is so wrapped up in Jesus that either outcome is win. This is the source of unshakeable joy: when Christ is your life, no circumstance can steal Him from you.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, be my life — not just part of it. Amen.
Joy grows in the soil of humility. This week Paul gives us one of the most beautiful pictures of Christ in Scripture — and calls us to let His mind shape ours.
Memory verse — "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:5)
Day 1 — Like-Minded — Philippians 2:1-4
Paul's joy is made complete when believers are unified. Unity isn't sameness — it's choosing to value others above yourself. This is countercultural in every age.
Reflect:
Pray: Lord, give me a heart that considers others. Amen.
Day 2 — The Descent of Christ — Philippians 2:5-8
Jesus, being God, didn't cling to His rights. He emptied Himself, took the form of a servant, and humbled Himself to death on a cross. Every step downward.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, You went low for me. Help me go low for others. Amen.
Day 3 — The Exaltation — Philippians 2:9-11
Because He humbled Himself, God exalted Him. The way up in God's kingdom is always down. Every knee will bow — every tongue will confess. Christ's humility ends in glory.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, I trust Your timing to lift me. Help me wait in humility. Amen.
Day 4 — Work Out Your Salvation — Philippians 2:12-18
'Work out' — not 'work for.' What God has worked in, we work out into daily life. And we do it 'without grumbling or arguing' — shining like stars in a dark world.
Reflect:
Pray: Spirit, work in me what I cannot work in myself. Amen.
Day 5 — Timothy & Epaphroditus — Philippians 2:19-30
Paul holds up two faithful servants as living examples. Their joy was found in serving others to the point of risk. Humble service is never wasted.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, make me faithful in the small, hidden places. Amen.
Paul lists his impressive résumé — and counts it all loss compared to knowing Christ. This week we learn how to forget what is behind and press on toward what is ahead.
Memory verse — "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14)
Day 1 — Rejoice in the Lord — Philippians 3:1-3
Joy is a safeguard. Paul tells the Philippians it's no trouble to repeat the call to rejoice — because joy in the Lord protects us from false confidence and false teachers.
Reflect:
Pray: Lord, anchor my confidence in You alone. Amen.
Day 2 — Loss for the Sake of Knowing Him — Philippians 3:4-9
Paul had every reason for confidence in the flesh. He counts it all as 'rubbish' — the Greek word is stronger than that — compared to knowing Christ. What we lose for Him is never loss.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, You are worth more than anything I could gain. Amen.
Day 3 — The Power of His Resurrection — Philippians 3:10-11
Paul wants to know Christ — really know Him — including the fellowship of His sufferings. There is a depth of intimacy with Jesus that only comes through shared suffering.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, draw me deeper — even through what hurts. Amen.
Day 4 — Press On — Philippians 3:12-16
Paul hasn't arrived — and neither have we. The Christian life is a press, not a coast. Forgetting what's behind (failure or success), straining toward what's ahead.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, help me leave what's behind and press toward You. Amen.
Day 5 — Citizens of Heaven — Philippians 3:17-21
Our citizenship is in heaven. We live as foreigners here, awaiting a Savior who will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body. This world is not our home.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, set my heart on home. Amen.
Paul closes with some of the most quoted verses in Scripture — and the secret of contentment in every circumstance. This week we learn the rhythm of a peaceful heart.
Memory verse — "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
Day 1 — Stand Firm — Philippians 4:1-3
Paul calls two women by name and pleads with them to agree in the Lord. Unity matters enough to name out loud. Standing firm often means making peace.
Reflect:
Pray: Lord, give me courage to pursue peace. Amen.
Day 2 — Anxious for Nothing — Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice. Be gentle. Don't be anxious. Pray with thanksgiving. The result? Peace that guards your heart — a peace that doesn't make sense by the world's math.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, I bring my anxiety to You. Guard my heart with Your peace. Amen.
Day 3 — Think on These Things — Philippians 4:8-9
Paul gives us a filter for our thoughts: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable. What we feed our minds shapes our peace.
Reflect:
Pray: Spirit, renew my mind. Help me think on what's true. Amen.
Day 4 — The Secret of Contentment — Philippians 4:10-13
Contentment is a learned thing — not a felt thing. Paul learned it through plenty and through want. The strength to be content in any situation comes from Christ.
Reflect:
Pray: Jesus, teach me contentment in this exact season. Amen.
Day 5 — My God Will Supply — Philippians 4:14-23
Paul ends where he began — with thanksgiving for partners and confidence that God will supply every need. Not every want. Every need. And His supply is according to His glorious riches.
Reflect:
Pray: Father, You are my supply. Thank You for every provision, seen and unseen. Amen.
