Leviticus 25:1-7

The Field Can Lie Fallow

6 minute read

The land of Israel was given a Sabbath. Every seventh year, farmers were told not to sow or prune. The field that could produce was allowed to lie still.

That command must have felt risky. A resting field looks unproductive. Yet God built pause into the life of the land because He knew what both soil and people forget: constant production eventually consumes what it depends on.

October can tempt us to gather everything, preserve everything, and prepare for everything at once. But God is not anxious about an unworked field. He is able to sustain what He asks us to release.

A fallow season is not wasted ground. It is soil being restored beneath the surface. Your quiet, limits, and pauses may be doing work you cannot measure yet.

Reflect

  • Which part of your life feels required to produce without pause?
  • What would a small, faithful fallow space look like this week?
  • Why does stopping feel risky to you?

Pray

Provider God, give me courage to leave some ground unworked. Restore what constant effort has depleted, and teach me to trust Your provision. Amen.
